Already 90 years old, Mario Zagallo has a respiratory infection
2022-08-06 09:05JAKARTA -- Brazil's iconic soccer player and coach Mario Zagallo has been hospitalized with a respiratory infection, the clinic that treated him said Thursday (28/7).
The 90-year-old Brazilian legend, who became the first man to win the World Cup as a player and coach, has been in intensive care in a hospital in Rio de Janeiro since Tuesday.
He is currently in good condition and is "breathing spontaneously, without the aid of equipment," the Barra D'or hospital said.
Zagallo was tested for COVID-19 but the results were negative, the hospital said.
Soon turning 91 years old, The Old Wolf, as he is known in Brazil, used to post commemorative photos of his career on Instagram where he has 115,000 followers.
Four days ago she posted a photo of herself at the barbershop.
As a striker, he was part of the Brazil team that won the World Cup in 1958 and 1962 with Pele.
He went on to coach Brazil which won the 1970 World Cup, assistant coach when the Selecao won in 1994, and coach again in 1998 when Brazil lost in the final to France.
Other footballers who won the World Cup as a player and coach were Franz Beckenbauer of Germany (1974 and 1990) and Didier Deschamps of France (1998 and 2018).
Zagallo's highlight was undoubtedly the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.
Despite being newly appointed coach, his team won the title by displaying spectacular football that made the likes of Jairzinho, Tostao, Gerson and Rivellino known around the world, alongside Pele.
"My dear friend @zagallooficial, I know you are going through a tough time but I want you to know I am sending positive energy for your recovery," Pele wrote on Instagram.
Pele himself, who is now 81 years old, has suffered from health problems in the last three years. He was hospitalized twice for colon cancer and once for kidney stones.
