Sky Sports Italia reported on Friday night that Arsenal's out-on-loan Spanish defender Pablo Marí, who was unfortunately stabbed by a madman while shopping on Thursday, has completed back surgery and will be out 2 months as he recuperates.


According to the report, Serie A side Monza, where Marí currently plays for on-loan, quoted a statement from the Niguarda Hospital where the player is treating, saying that in addition to the back surgery for Marí, doctors also performed two muscle reconstructive surgery for the serious wounds he had sustained through the attack.


The attending doctor of Marí also added that, in medical terms, a must be recuperated for 2 months after such muscle reconstructive surgery before he can undergo physiotherapy and rehabilitative activities, hence Marí will now be instructed to wait for his surgical wounds to be sutured for another next 2 or 3 days, before fully focusing on recuperation.


In addition, according to follow-up reports from the Milan police, the police have confirmed the identity of the deceased in the case as Luis Fernando Luggieri, a 47-year-old Bolivian male Carrefour employee.


After the incident, Carrefour also issued a statement announcing that all stores of the group in Italy will immediately remove knives from displays to prevent similar incidents from happening again. In addition, Carrefour will also set up an exclusive area in all its malls around the world where fans can send their messages to Marí and mourn the deceased Luggieri.


After completing the operation, Marí did not forget to post a photo of himself and his wife while lying on the hospital bed with thumbs up through his personal official Twitter account, where he wrote: "After yesterday's difficult times, my family and I would like to tell everyone that luckily we are all well and thank you for your blessings and loving care."


"At the same time, I would like to express my condolences and strength to the families and friends of the victims, and we sincerely hope that all those injured will recover as soon as possible."


Marí was taken to hospital for emergency treatment after being stabbed by a deranged man while shopping at a local Carrefour mall in Milan on Thursday night.


After being sent to the hospital, Monza chairman Adriano Galliani and coach Raffael Palladino have both rushed to the hospital with Marí's agent to visit and accompany the player. Later, his agent also confirmed to the media and Arsenal that Marí, who was stabbed in the back, was not in danger for the time being.


According to the local police in Milan, the madman has been confirmed to be a 46-year-old male Carrefour employee. In addition to Marí, four other customers were injured in the incident, one of whom unfortunately passed away shortly after being sent to the hospital.  The sixth victim in the incident has only received light injuries and has been approved to return home for recuperation.


Marí, 29, was born on August 31, 1993 in Almussafes, Spain. He is 1.93 meters tall and plays as a central defender. Marí, who came through Mallorca's youth academy, started playing for the Mallorca reserve team at the age of 17, and officially completed his first-team debut in December 2011. From 2013 to 2016, Marí played for Tarragona, and during the 2014/15 season, he helped the club promoted to the second division as the winners of the Spanish third division promotion play-off.


In August 2016, Marí transferred to defending Premier League champions Manchester City, but he was on loan all the year round. In July 2019, Marí joined Brazilian giants Flamengo for €1.3million, becoming the first Spanish star to move to Brazil in this century, Marí became famous after the team won 1 Brazilian league title and 1 Copa Libertadores title, and he also  led the club to the final of the FIFA Club World Cup.


On January 29, 2020, Marí joined Arsenal initially on-loan and then being bought out. However, since joining, Marí  has rarely played for the Gunners, but were regularly benched. Last season, Marí was loaned to the Udinese. He played 15 times in all competitions for the club and scored 2 goals.


This season, Marí joined Serie A newcomers Monza on-loan. To date, he has made 8 appearances for the club and scored once.
