Bali United Failed to Advance to AFC Cup Semifinals

Bali United finished in third place in Group G of the 2022 AFC Cup.

GIANYAR -- Bali United FC failed to continue its progress to the semifinals of the 2022 AFC Cup ASEAN Zone, despite winning 1-0 from Kaya FCIloilo in the last match of Group G at the Captain I Wayan Dipta Stadium, Gianyar, Thursday (30/6/2022). Because in another match, Kedah Darul Aman won 5-1 over Visakha FC, which made Bali United's position shifted from the runners-up in Group G to third.

Thus, Bali United failed to get tickets to compete in the semifinals considering that the opportunity was only given to the group winners and the best runner-up from Group G, Group H, and Group I. In Group G, the group winners got tickets to the semifinals, Kedah Darul Aman FC.

Coach Aidil Sharin Sahak's team is scheduled to face the winner of Group H, PSM Makassar, who is Indonesia's only representative in the semifinals of the ASEAN Zone of the 2022 AFC Cup. Kedah and PSM are scheduled to compete on August 9, 2022.

In Group H, tickets to the semifinals were given not only to the group winners, but also to Kuala Lumpur City FC who came out as the best runner-up after winning 2-1 against the Singaporean team, Tampines Rovers, in the last match of the group stage, Thursday.

Meanwhile, for Group I, the ticket to advance to the semifinals was only obtained by the group winner, namely the Vietnam team, Viettel FC. In the last match of Group I elimination, Viettel slaughtered the group runners-up, Hougang United FC 5-2.

The crushing defeat made Hougang give the red carpet for Kuala Lumpur City FC to come out as the best runner-up.

Bali United FC supporters in the last minute of the match against Kaya FC Iloilo, Thursday, showed their disappointment at the achievement of the team who failed to qualify for the group stage, despite winning 1-0. In the stands, thousands of fans chanted: "AFC failed again, AFC failed again, evaluate, evaluate!"

Not only singing, the fans also lit a reddish flare (flare) and threw it towards the field. The fans' disappointment was not without reason, because Bali United for the third time only stuck playing in the group stage. Bali United first appeared in the AFC Cup in 2018, and will return to compete in the Asian level competition in 2020.

According to Bali United coach Stefano Cugurra alias Teco, the short preparation time is the main obstacle for players to consistently play well.

"We have to learn from that, players, coaches have to learn so that when there is an opportunity in the future we have to be more prepared," Teco said at a press conference, quoted from Antara.
