Borussia Mönchengladbach appoints Gerardo Seoane and Nils Schmadtke as new head coach and new sporting director respectively..

Borussia Mönchengladbach announced on the official website on Tuesday that the club has appointed Gerardo Seoane and Nils Schmadtke as its new head coach and new sporting director respectively.

According to Borussia Mönchengladbach's official statement, Seoane has signed on a three-year deal with the club which runs until the summer of 2026.

At the same time, Patrick Schnarwiler and Nicolas Dyon will also join the club as Seoane's assistant coach and fitness coach respectively.

The 44-year-old Seoane was born on October 30, 1978 in Luzern, Switzerland. He is 1.86 meters tall. He played as a center-back or defensive midfielder during his playing career. He has played for Luzern, Sion, Deportivo La Coruña, Grasshoppers and other clubs. He has dual citizenships of Switzerland and Spain.

After retiring, Seoane served as the head coach of the Luzern reserve team from 2013 to the first half of 2018. In July 2018, he replaced renowned head coach Adi Hütter as the head coach of the BSC Young Boys. During this time, he led the club to win 3 Swiss Super League and 1 Swiss Cup.

In May 2021, Seoane was appointed as the head coach of Bayer Leverkusen, but due to the extremely poor performances later on, Seoane was sacked in October last year.

The 34-year-old Nils Schmadtke was born in Hannover on March 16, 1989. He is 1.95 meters tall. His father, Jörg Schmadtke, is the sporting director of Liverpool.

Schmadtke, like his father, was a goalkeeper during his playing career and played for Köln, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Ingolstadt and Fortuna Düsseldorf.

After retiring due to serious injuries in the summer of 2012, Schmadtke devoted himself into scouting and served as a scout for Köln and Wolfsburg successively.

It is worth mentioning that Schmadtke served as the Head of Scout of Borussia Mönchengladbach from April 2019 to June 2020, so this can be regarded as the third time in his life that he has returned to work at the Bundesliga powerhouse.
