Brendan Rodgers wants Youri Tielemans to stay at Leicester
2022-01-16 00:35JAKARTA -- Leicester City coach Brendan Rodgers wants to keep Belgium international Youri Tielemans even though the midfielder may want a new challenge with another club. Leicester pulled Tielemans from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco in 2019 after an impressive loan spell.
The 24-year-old scored the winner as Leicester won the FA Cup in May a year ago. The midfielder, whose contract still runs until June 2023, has been widely linked by the British media with a move to Leicester's rival team, Arsenal.
"He's still young and in his contract he has to make sure to look at every option," Rodgers told reporters ahead of Saturday's league game against Burnley.
"I want him to be here at Leicester and that's natural. But I also understand it's a very short career. For players, it's about ambition, challenges and sometimes about different environments. We've seen it many times before. win the Champions League and players will move on. That's how it is," said Rodgers.
Rodgers insists he just wants to continue to forge Tielemans as a player, keep him focused and let other people take care of other things. Rodgers said he enjoyed his close relationship with Tielemans, who has scored six goals and provided three assists in all competitions this season.
"This attachment is very strong. I made a commitment to him when he first came and that we would improve him as a player until he believed in his environment," said Rodgers.
Once a player is committed, focused and professional, Rodgers insists there is never a worry. In his eyes, Tielemans felt the joy of being at Leicester and strengthening the Foxes. "You also have to respect the short careers of these people," he said.
