Dries Mertens Turns Down New Contract Offer at Napoli

Napoli have option to extend Mertens' contract

NAPLES - President of Italian League club Napoli Aurelio De Laurentiisme revealed that Dries Mertens rejected offers of a new deal in the transfer market this summer.

The Italian football page reported that De Laurentiis had several times offered a new contract at a lower value than what Mertens had previously.

Napoli have the option of extending Mertens' contract for a fee of 4.5 million euros (Rp68 billion) per season, but the club is reluctant to activate this option.

"I first offered him 1.8 million euros, then I raised 200 thousand euros and then reached 2.4 million euros and he refused. He wants to stay for one year," said De Laurentiis.

Currently Mertens is a free agent after his contract in Napoli expired last June 30 and there has been no agreement to sign a new agreement although negotiations are still ongoing.

Since the beginning of last month, the Belgian has expressed hope of staying at Napoli and is waiting for a contract extension offer.

Mertens is Il Partenopei's all-time top scorer and is tipped to be the new Napoli captain to replace Lorenzo Insigne who left for the United States.

He joined Napoli in the summer of 2013 from PSV Eindhoven for 10 million euros. Nine years with Napoli, he appeared in 397 games in various competitions and scored 148 goals and 90 assists.

Last season, the 35-year-old played 37 games to create 13 goals and two assists.
