Five things to learn from City's win over Southampton in the FA Cup
2022-03-23 23:35SOUTHAMPTON -- Manchester City advanced to the FA Cup semi-finals in convincing fashion. In the last eight, City beat the host Southampton, 4-1 at St Mary's Stadium, Sunday (20/3/2022) night WIB.
City are back on track. Previously, the sky blue team only drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace in the English Premier League stage. The Saints became the target of their anger.
Here are five things that can be learned from City's victory over Soton, quoted from si.com, Monday (21/3). Pep Guardiola's polished squad finally triumphed over Southampton. Previously in the two meetings between the two teams this season, in the Premier League stage, they always ended in a draw. Respectively with a score of 1-1 and 0-0.
The Citizens have valuable capital ahead of the most important moment of the season. They will face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League stage. Then meet Liverpool on the domestic front, after the international break.
City looks more effective in front of the opponent's goal. It became their homework in the previous two meetings against Soton. But in this match, Raheem Sterling and team showed an ideal performance.
Second, Pep made changes that led to positive results. Initially he fielded Gabriel Jesus, Sterling and Jack Grealish as starters in attack. There are concerns, the third time City will find it difficult to score against Southampton this season.
In the second half, he fielded Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez to replace Jesus and Grealish. The right decision. Both Foden and Mahrez both contributed goals for Manchester Blue's victory.
Third, Foden shows a positive consistency when showing off. He operates in various areas up front, including spearheading a false nine role. The England international has scored 11 goals and provided eight assists in 33 games in various competitions this season.
Fourth, there is an increase shown by Grealish. The former Aston Villa was often hit by criticism. Understandably when bringing in concerned, City spent 100 million pounds.
He has to make a difference in every game. Grealish performed well in the derby against Manchester United, a few weeks ago. Then when his team was held by Palace, he struggled to produce optimal performance.
Most recently, during 63 minutes of St Mary's Stadium, he was judged to be playing well. Grealish was able to work effectively with Kevin de Bruyne, Sterling, Joao Cancelo and Ilkay Gundogan.
Fifth, the international break arrived at the right time. Previously Pep Guardiola said his players need to rest for a while. Because they are still competing in three different competitions.
The 4-1 win over Southampton was the perfect way to the break. For a moment they can relax physically and mentally. City have the quality and experience to go all the way to win the treble.
