Football news: Brazil Coutinho's World Cup hopes in jeopardy with muscle injury

Aston Villa's Philippe Coutinho will miss their next two games and could be out for longer with a quadriceps injury.

Coutinho, 30 , joined Villa on a permanent basis from Barcelona in his final season, but the playmaker has failed to score or provide an assist in 12 league games.

He missed Sunday 's 3-1 Premier League win over Manchester United and will miss another face-off against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford on Thursday, as well as a visit to Brighton in the league on Sunday . Emery has confirmed Coutinho is out with a quadriceps injury .

Unknown length of absence

I don't know how long this situation will last, but it is certain that he will not be able to play until the end of the World Cup . He also won't play Thursday or Sunday because he's injured and he's out longer .

Brazil coach Tite will announce later on Monday his 26-man squad for the World Cup in Qatar from Nov. 20 to Dec. 18 .

Coutinho made his debut for Brazil in 2010 and has more than 60 caps, but his disappointing form this season has led to doubts about his place in the squad.
