Former Leeds United head coach Marcelo Bielsa close to being appointed as new Uruguay national team head coach..

César Luís Merlo, the renowned resident reporter of the Argentine local media TyC Sports, brought exclusive news on Wednesday that former Leeds United Argentine head coach Marcelo Bielsa is close to being appointed as the new head coach of the Uruguay national team.

According to Merlo's report, the Uruguayan Football Association has been in contact with Bielsa for some time, and the negotiations between the two parties have reached a very advanced stage.

It is expected that Bielsa will be appointed on a long-term deal which runs until the end of the 2026 United FIFA World Cup South American qualifiers, if Uruguay successfuly in qualified for that World Cup, Bielsa's contract will also be automatically extended.

The 67-year-old Bielsa became famous in his early years after he led the Newells Old Boys to win the Argentine Primera División twice and reached the final of the Copa Libertadores as a head coach. Later, he also coached Marseille and Athletic Bilbao, Velez Sarsfield and other clubs. He have also coached the Argentina national team and the Chile national team, and the teams they coach will almost certainly be successful.

In June 2018, Bielsa became the head coach of Leeds United, where he successfully led the club to win the EFL Championship two years later, and returned to the Premier League after 16 years.

However, as results worsened, Bielsa was sacked at the end of February 2022. Despite this, he still has a saint-like status in the hearts of Leeds United fans.
