Lampard: Distracted to make Chelsea concede against Luton Town2021-01-30 07:13
JAKARTA - Chelsea manager Frank Lampard admitted his players were complacent when they beat Luton Town's second-tier team 3-1 in the fourth round of the FAdi Cup at Stamford Bridge, London, Sunday (25/1).
Two goals that were packed by Tammy Abraham in the first 17 minutes of the match, according to Lampard, had caught the Chelsea players off guard. As a result, Luton was able to score a return goal through Jordan Clark which was created thanks to the poor anticipation of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga for a weak volley at him.
"There was a moment when the team was a little complacent because of a comfortable 2-0 advantage, something that was not good," said Lampard after the match as reported by the official Chelsea website.
"We immediately woke up to the situation, returned to dominate the match and the team's game was comfortable again," he added.
Abraham then restored Chelsea's two-goal lead through his hat-trick in the 74th minute, a goal that Lampard said was the result of solid teamwork.
"Our third goal was the result of teamwork and Callum Hudson-Odoi was very good with an assist for Tammy," he said.
"Billy Gilmour also contributed by cooperating with one or two passes with Callum. So it was indeed a good goal and a pleasure to see," added Lampard.
Chelsea actually had the opportunity to increase the winning margin when they were awarded a penalty, but Timo Werner, who was the executioner, failed to take the opportunity when the direction of the execution was predictable and goalkeeper Simon Sluga stopped.
"I also feel Timo's disappointment. He performed very well earlier, he spreads many threats. Things like that sometimes happen," he said.
"I've missed a penalty once, I know the feeling, maybe he was hit too but I said he didn't have to. It's my job and my colleagues to encourage Timo again. I'm sure he will score another goal soon, hopefully," he concluded. Lampard.
In the fifth round, Chelsea's opponents have been determined, namely another Championship Division team, Barnsley. Chelsea will travel to Barnsley headquarters in the upcoming February 8-11 match period.
