Leeds United bolster defensive ranks by signing Red Bull Salzburg

Leeds United announced on their official website on Tuesday that the club has signed Austrian international centre-back Maximilian Wöber from Red Bull Salzburg.

According to Leeds United's official statement, Wöber has signed on a four-and-a-half-year long-term deal which runs until the summer of 2027 with the club, and he will also wear the No. 39 shirt.

After completing his joining procedures, Wöber, who was interviewed by Leeds United's official website for the first time, said: "This is a huge challenge for me. I already have a lot of experience. I have played for Ajax and Sevilla, and played for Red Bull Salzburg for three-and-a-half years.

"It's definitely something special to come to Leeds United now, a club with such a long history and tradition, and it's been a dream of mine growing up, and it's fantastic to be here at Elland Road."

"My biggest strength is my personality and character, I will never give up on the pitch, I will give it my all, no matter what the score is, whether we win or lose, I will give everything for this badge. "

"I'm going to work hard to fit in and play well to be accepted in the dressing room and try to use every opportunity I've been given to continue to grow."

The 24-year-old Wöber was born in Vienna, Austria on February 4, 1998. He is 1.88 meters tall and primarily plays as a center-back, but he can also be deployed as a left-back.

Wöber joined the Rapid Vienna youth academy since he was a child and was promoted to the first-team in the summer of 2015. He made his Rapid Vienna first-team debut in the Europa League in February 2016.

In August 2017, Wöber joined Ajax for €7.5 million. During this time, he has won 1 Eredivisie and 1 KNVB Cup with the club.

After briefly transferring to Sevilla in January 2019, Wöber returned to Austria to join Red Bull Salzburg in August of the same year for  €12 million.

Since joining Red Bull Salzburg, Wöber has played 125 times for the club in all competitions, scoring 9 goals and assisting 9 times, leading the club to win the Austrian Bundesliga and the Austrian Cup titles for 3 consecutive years.

It is worth mentioning that Wöber is the third player signed by Leeds United from Red Bull Salzburg this season. Prior to this, the Premier League club also brought in Brenden Aarronson and Rasmus Kristensen.
