LONDON - Premier League giants Arsenal has officially announced Norwegian international Martin Ødegaard has joined the club for the remainder of the season from defending La Liga champions, Real Madrid. Ødegaard will wear the no.11 jersey vacated by former German international Mesut Özil who had just joined Turkish Super Lig side Fenerbahçe on a free transfer after terminating his contract with the Gunners.

The loan move of this 22 year-old Norwegian wonderkid has been circulating around the internet for the past few days following Spanish reports suggesting that Ødegaard had personally requested to leave the Galacticos on loan after feeling unhappy with his lack of game time. Subsequent reports then claimed Ødegaard refused the idea of returning to fellow La Liga club Real Sociedad on a second stint in favour of moving to the Premier League, once Arsenal's interest in him became known.

Sky Sports then reported that Ødegaard a deal has been agreed between the both clubs which will see the Norwegian playmaker join the Gunners for the remainder of the season without an obligation to buy. Speaking on his first interview with Arsenal after officially joining the club on loan, Ødegaard said, “I think it's the biggest league, especially in Norway, so for me it's always been a dream to play in the Premier League and I always liked the way Arsenal played and everything about the club. So it's a dream come true in many ways.

“I like the club and I always liked the way that the club wants to play. Everything about the club and now how the manager wants to play, I think it's a club that really suits me well. So I think it's a good match.”

Manage Mikel Arteta has this said about his new signing, “It’s great that we’ve secured Martin to come to us until the end of the season. Martin is of course a player that we all know very well and although still young, he has been playing at the top level for a while. Martin will provide us with quality offensive options and we’re all excited to be integrating him into our plans between now and May.”

Meanwhile Arsenal's Technical director Edu said: “We are delighted to welcome Martin to the club until the end of the season. I would like to thank everyone at Real Madrid and Martin’s representatives for their collaboration in making this loan move happen. Martin is an exceptional talent and we are strengthening our squad by introducing an exciting offensive player to the club for the remaining months of this season.”

Ødegaard started his career in Norway with Stromsgodset, where he made his debut as a 15-year-old in April 2014, becoming the youngest-ever player to feature in the top division. After featuring regularly in the Stromsgodset team in his first season, Odegaard was signed by Real Madrid in January 2015 and subsequently became their youngest player in May 2015.

In the three seasons from 2017/18, Ødegaard spent loan spells with Heerenveen and Vitesse Arnhem in the Netherlands and then last season back in Spain with Real Sociedad, where he helped the club reach the final of the Copa Del Rey and also qualify for the Europa League.

The 22-year-old has also made 25 appearances for Norway, making his debut in August 2014 when he became the youngest debutant for his country’s senior national team at the age of just 15 years and 253 days.
