Nadal Gets Frustrated With Recurring Injury To His Foot

Nadal got the injury in 2005 ago.

TORONTO -- World number four Rafa Nadal is starting to worry about a recurring leg injury. Most recently, because of this he had to withdraw from the Masters 10000 hardcourt tournament which took place in Toronto, Canada due to continuous pain in his injured left leg.

The injury kept the 20-time Grand Slam champion out of Wimbledon and this year's Tokyo Olympics and saw him crash out in the third round at last week's Washington Open.

"I had this problem for several months, as people know," Nadal said as quoted by Reuters on Wednesday (11/8).

"Of course, it's not a happy situation after all the success I've had here in Canada, not being able to play this year after a year out," said the five-time champion of the tournament, which was canceled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said the decision was difficult but added that the most important thing was to get better so he could respect his time on the pitch again.

"Today, with this pain, I can't enjoy it, and I really can't believe that I have the opportunity to fight for the things I really need to fight for," Nadal said.

Nadal admits he has had a recurring foot problem since 2005 that resurfaced at Roland Garros this year where he lost to Novak Djokovic in the semifinals before ruling out the two biggest tournaments of the year. Nadal will now shift his focus to recovering health ahead of the US Open in New York.

"I really wanted to play here, but now is the time to make a decision, and unfortunately this is a decision I have taken, and maybe in the next few days we will know more," said Nadal.

Second seed Nadal will be replaced by fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the main draw.
