OFFICIAL: Freiburg sign new contract with Austrian defender Lienhart

On Thursday, Austrian central defender Philipp Lienhart confirmed that he will continue to play for Freiburg in the coming season. The latter, as always, did not disclose the specific number of years of the contract.

"Bild" stated that the contract period between Freiburg and Lienhart will last at least until 2024.

The 26-year-old Lienhart made his debut from Real Madrid in 2015 and joined Freiburg on loan in 2017 due to few appearances. In June of the following year, the Austrian moved to Freiburg permanently for 2 million euros.

Over the past six years, Lienhart has played 167 times for Freiburg, with a total of 10 goals and 11 assists. In April of this year, the player once revealed his personal willingness to return to La Liga, but his default clause of nearly 15 million euros deterred other teams.

"Philip is a solid player in our team," said sporting director Klemens Hartenbach. "He can play anywhere in our different defenses with his individual quality and smarts. We are very happy that our shared journey continues."

Lienhart responded: "Freiburg have become my home in recent years. I'm proud of the progress I've made as a player and the progress we've all made as a team. "

"The story is not over yet. I am very much looking forward to continuing to be a part of our team in the future and giving my all next season."
