Pogba decides not to have knee surgery to keep hope of appearing at the World Cup

Paul Pogba has suffered a right knee meniscus injury.

JAKARTA -- Paul Pogba has decided against having surgery on his knee in the hope he can feature for France at this winter's World Cup in Qatar.

Pogba officially rejoined Juventus this summer after his contract at Manchester United expired. He worried his country when he injured his right knee in training last month during Juventus' tour of the United States.

The 29-year-old midfielder visited a specialist consultant in Lyon on Tuesday (2/8/2022) and has been convinced to avoid surgery. Instead, Pogba will undergo conservative treatment for five weeks.

A meniscus problem is expected to keep him out for more than a month, but it is hoped that by choosing the fastest recovery option, he will return within the first 10 days of September.

According to a report by Gazzetta dello Sport , quoted by the Daily Mail , Wednesday (3/8/2022), the five-week conservative treatment for the 2018 World Cup winner will first involve three people in the gym and then the remaining two on the pitch.

The current schedule set by Juventus' medical staff would see Pogba return before the first international break of the new season, meaning he could target a return before the start of the Champions League.

The midfielder injured the lateral meniscus in his right knee during a training session just over a week ago in Los Angeles. Within days it proved the problem was much more serious than expected and surgery seemed a possible solution.

One option being considered is to remove a piece of the meniscus, which would keep Pogba out for 40 to 60 days, and the operation is suitable for younger players and could affect his mobility.

Another option would be to have the wound stitched up, but that would require a long four to five months on the sidelines, effectively keeping Pogba out of the world's premier football event in November in Qatar.

The news may allay fears Juventus could be forced to rethink their transfer business in order to fill the void in midfield.

They are desperate to work things out, with Adrien Rabiot and Arthur Melo set to leave, having released Aaron Ramsey. Chelsea flop Saul Niguez has also reportedly emerged as an option, after his future at Atletico Madrid remains unclear.
