Ronaldo may be absent in MU's opening match in the English Premier League, what's up?
2022-07-25 20:31MANCHESTER -- Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly set to miss Manchester United's (MU) Premier League opener in England on August 7, 2022 against Brighton & Hove Albion. The 37-year-old has been in the limelight in this summer's transfer window after revealing his desire to leave Old Trafford in order to stay in the Champions League.
According to Dailymail reported by Sportsmole , Monday (25/7/2022), Ronaldo has also not joined his squad which is following a series of pre-season activities. The Portuguese star was allowed to miss MU's pre-season tour to Thailand and Australia due to family reasons. With the new season only two weeks away, Ronaldo's future is unclear.
The former Real Madrid star has indeed been training independently in Portugal. However, his absence from pre-season meant he was short of match practice time ahead of the new season.
Ronaldo has not returned to the club. United will face Atletico Madrid this weekend before taking on Rayo Vallecano at the end of a series of pre-season matches. Atletico are reportedly interested in signing Ronaldo. Los Rojiblancos are even ready to release Antoine Griezman in the transfer market this summer in order to get money to sign Ronaldo.
Recent reports say Manchester United seem to be softening their stance on Ronaldo's desire to leave. The Red Devils are ready to let Ronaldo go on loan, but on the condition that he has to sign a new contract for one more year. His current contract expires in June 2023.
There is a reason why Manchester United want Ronaldo to sign a one-year contract extension as a condition because the Red Devils want the player to appear in the Champions League with United if Erik ten Hag manages to bring his team through to the competition. In addition, the sponsors would be happy if Ronaldo signed a new contract at Manchester United.
