Salah 'devastated' as Liverpool miss out on Champions League berth

Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah says he is "completely devastated" by failing to qualify for the Champions League and that the club let their fans down.

Manchester United beat Chelsea 4-1 on Thursday, ending Liverpool's hopes of securing a place in Europe's top club competition next season. Jurgen Klopp's side are fifth, four points adrift of the top four with one game remaining.

Liverpool finished just one point behind Premier League champions Manchester City last season, but have failed to challenge this season due to injuries and a string of poor form.

"I'm completely devastated," Salah tweeted. "There is absolutely no excuse. We had everything we needed to get into next year's Champions League and we failed.

"We are Liverpool and qualifying is the bare minimum. I'm sorry but it's too early for an uplifting or optimistic post. We've let you and ourselves down."

Salah joined the club back in 2017 and it will be the first time Liverpool have not played in the Champions League since then.

There had been speculation that the Egypt international was headed for a move after an extremely poor season compared to the club's high standards, but Salah put to rest any rumors last year by signing a three-year deal.
