Salihamidzic: Bayern may not be able to afford Cancelo's buyout fee

Hasan Salihamidzic said on Sunday that Bayern Munich are open to signing Cancelo permanently this summer, but they may not be able to afford the player's buyout fee.

Joao Cancelo joined Bayern from Manchester City on loan this winter, and the contract lasted only 5 months. There are many indications that the loan agreement for the Portuguese has an optional buyout clause, worth around 70 million euros.

Salihamidzic's statement

"We made it clear to João that 70 million euros is hard to imagine for us in the next few years," Salihamidzic told Bild in an interview. "Nevertheless, the possibility of him staying at the team this summer has not been ruled out. If all parties agree to reach a solution, we can find a way to do it."

Salley later added: "João feels comfortable in Munich and wants to perform in the second half of the season. He knows that for many years he has been one of our dream players."

Guardiola's response

Cancelo's contract with Manchester City will end in 2027, but he joined Bayern Munich on loan for half a season this winter. The media attributed the reason for Cancelo's departure to the conflict between him and Guardiola, and also believed that after this incident, the possibility of Portugal returning to the team this summer is relatively small.

However, Guardiola insists no decision has been made on Cancelo's future at City. The Manchester City boss told Sky Sports on Sunday: "He's at Bayern right now to see what happens at the end of the season. After the season we're going to talk about a lot of things about a lot of players."

"The same thing happens at the end of every season. We're going to talk to a lot of players, it's always been the case since I was at Manchester City. Maybe next season we'll have the squad we have, there will be new ones, I don't know. "

"Whether it is Joao or my personal future, no one knows what will happen. Now the winter window is closed, it is over. We will focus on the remaining four months and then wait and see. For any player In the future, I don't know what's going to happen," Guardiola concluded.
