Flamengo announced on their official Twitter on Friday that the club has appointed Sevilla's renowned former Argentine head coach Jorge Sampaoli, as their new head coach.

According to Flamengo's official statement, Sampaoli has signed on a short-term one-and-a-half-year deal with the club which only runs until the winter of 2024.

The 63-year-old Sampaoli once played as a defensive midfielder during his playing career and only played for Newell's Old Boys. Sampaoli was forced to end his professional football career early due to a recurring fractured fibula injury.

Sampaoli began to devote himself into coaching in 1991. He has successively coached in Chile, Ecuador and Peru, with the likes of Sporting Cristal, O'Higgins, Emelec, Universidad de Chile and etc., successfully leading the latter to win the Chilean League 3 times as well as Copa Libertadores 1 time.

In December 2012, Sampaoli was appointed as the head coach of the Chilean national team. During this spell, he won applause for his gorgeous offensive football tactics. However, he resigned in January 2016 having fallen out with Chilean Football Association chairman at the time Arturo Salah.

In June of the same year, Sampaoli was appointed as the head coach of Sevilla. His most glorious achievement was leading the club to break the 40-game unbeaten record of giants Real Madrid.

In May 2017, Sampaoli returned to his home country and served as the head coach of the Argentina national team. However, after losing to France in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia round of 16s knockout stage, he was sacked.

From 2018 to 2020, Sampaoli has successively coached the two Campeonato Brasileiro Série A giants, Santos and Atlético Mineiro.

In December 2021, Sampaoli returned to Europe and become the head coach of Marseille.

Although he successfully led the club to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League and helped the Les Olympiens finish second in Ligue 1, heleft club after his contract expired last summer, due to disagreements with Sporting Director Pablo Longoria over transfer budget.

After leaving Marseille, Sampaoli replaced current Wolverhampton Wanderers mange Julen Lopetegui as Sevilla's head coach again in October last year.

However, because the La Liga powerhouse was unable to get rid of the downturn throughout the season and hovered on the edge of the relegation zone, Sampaoli was eventually sacked on March 21 this year.
