Sporting news: Ronaldo banned for two games by FA for smashing fan's phone in April

Cristiano Ronaldo, who left Premier League side Manchester United by mutual agreement on Tuesday, was suspended for two games by an independent monitoring panel for smashing a teenage fan's phone after last season's loss to Everton.

Video footage appears to show Ronaldo angrily slapping the phone in the boy's hand following United's 1-0 defeat at Goodison Park in April .

The boy's mother said his hands were injured and the screen of his phone was smashed. Ronaldo was cautioned by police in August and charged with misconduct by the English Football Association ( FA ) in September .

Ronaldo, who has since apologized on social media, was warned about his future behavior and fined £ 50,000 , about $ 59,875 .

missed two games

The FA said in a statement on Wednesday: "The striker admitted his conduct after the final whistle of the Premier League match between Manchester United and Everton .

" An independent regulatory committee found his conduct to be inappropriate and violent at a subsequent hearing and imposed these sanctions. "

The ban means Ronaldo will miss two games if he joins another Premier League club. And the Portugal captain is in Qatar for the World Cup, with his side kicking off against Ghana on Thursday.
