The biggest upsets of the 2022 World Cup

The 2022 World Cup is like a roller coaster, allowing fans around the world to experience the thrill of a lifetime. Since kicking off on November 20 , this year's iteration of the prestigious event has seen numerous upsets, starting with wild results in the group stages .

 

Croatia beat Brazil 1-1 in the quarter-finals (penalties: 4-2 )


Although Vatreni reached the 2018 World Cup final, Brazil reached the quarter-finals with a win over Croatia as favorites .


Stunned after scoring the first goal of the game in extra time after a goalless 90 minutes . Penalty shootout hero Dominic Livakovic took Vatreni to the semi-finals after Croatia forward Bruno Petkovic equalized. Croatia are now in their second straight semi-final after losing to France in the 2018 World Cup final .

 

Group E final Japan 2-1 Spain


The Japanese team defeated the Spanish team and qualified for the group stage for the first time in history. The Samurai Blues' victory put them in the last 16 of the World Cup for the second time in a row and for the fourth time in the last six games. Japan lost to Croatia on penalties in the round of 16, their first knockout stage win in their history .

 

Morocco beat Spain 0-0 in round of 16 (penalties: 3-0 )


This is a historic victory for Morocco. The Atlas Lions beat 2010 World Cup champions Spain to reach the quarter-finals of the storied tournament for the first time in history.


Abdulhamid Sabiri , Hakim Al Shayedhi and Ashraf Hakimi Mohul scored in Morocco's first-ever World Cup penalty shootout, while Yassin Bonu blocked all three PKs he faced to pull off the stunner. Morocco will face Portugal in Saturday's quarterfinals .

 

Group H final South Korea 2-1 Portugal


Portugal had advanced to the knockout stages, but they lost to a very hungry South Korea, who needed a win in Group H to secure their place for the third time in history. Wolves forward Hwang Hee-chan scored the winning goal with an assist from Son Heung-min. South Korea lost 4-1 to Brazil in the round of 16 .
