Tokyo Vs Keihanshin: 2 Poles of Football in J1 League 2022

This season's J1 League teams are concentrated in two places, Greater Tokyo and Keihanshin.

JAKARTA -- There are two giant poles that are the center of football in the Meiji Yasuda J1 League 2022 event. The top caste event of the Japanese League this season, aka J1 League 2022, is attended by 18 teams from all over Japan.

However, there are some teams that have cages that are close together. Broadly speaking, this season's J1 League teams are concentrated in two places: the Greater Tokyo Area and the Keihanshin Area. In fact, only seven teams were not from the area. The seven teams are Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo (Hokkaido), Shimizu S-Pulse (Shizuoka Prefecture), Jubilo Iwata (Shizuoka Prefecture), Nagoya Grampus (Aichi Prefecture), Sanfrecce Hiroshima (Hiroshima Prefecture), Avispa Fukuoka (Fukuoka Prefecture), and Sagan. Tosu (Saga Prefecture).

Apart from them, the other 11 teams came from the Greater Tokyo Area and also the Keihanshin Area. The Greater Tokyo Area is an urban area around Tokyo that forms the largest single urban area in the world.

This season, there are seven teams from prefectures located within the Greater Tokyo Area, but only one team from downtown Tokyo: FCTokyo which is based at Ajinomoto Stadium in Chofu, Tokyo.

The remaining six teams come from prefectures around downtown Tokyo that form a single Greater Tokyo Area. The six teams are Kawasaki Frontale (Kanagawa Prefecture), Yokohama F. Marinos (Kanagawa Prefecture), Shonan Bellmare (Kanagawa Prefecture), Urawa Red Diamonds (Saitama Prefecture), Kashima Antlers (Ibaraki Prefecture), and Kashiwa Reysol (Chiba Prefecture).

From these teams, there are several hot derbies that are presented. The Kanagawa derby brought together two teams from Kanagawa Prefecture, Yokohama F. Marinos and Kawasaki Frontale. The home of the two teams is only no more than 10 kilometers, making the competition between the two teams hot not only on the field, but also for the fans.

Shonan Bellmare actually also comes from the same prefecture, but does not have the same history of rivalry as the other two teams and is more distant than Marinos and Frontale.

Besides the Kanagawa Derby, Kawasaki Frontale was also involved in a fierce match titled Tamagawa Classico, bringing them together with FCTokyo.

Named the Tamagawa Clasico because the home of the two teams is separated by a large river in the Greater Tokyo Area called the Tama River, with the home of the two teams no more than 20km apart.

In another part of Greater Tokyo, there is the Shizuoka Derby which pits two teams from Shizuoka Prefecture, Jubilo Iwata and Shimizu S-Pulse. Jubilo Iwata's rise to the top caste this season has made this derby match back after a long absence.

Shimizu S-Pulse and Jubilo Iwata were also involved in a derby match with Aichi Prefecture team, Nagoya Grampus, in a match called the Tokai Derby.

There is a section in Greater Tokyo called the Chubu area which contains the Tokai area that has existed since the Edo period, containing the prefectures of Shizuoka, Aichi, Gifu, to Mie.

Meanwhile, another football pole in the Meiji Yasuda J1 League 2022 is the Keihanshin Area, the second largest metropolitan urban area in Japan after the Greater Tokyo Area, consisting of Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto.

The area, also known as the Kansai area, sent four teams in the top caste this season: Gamba Osaka (Osaka Prefecture), Cerezo Osaka (Osaka Prefecture), Vissel Kobe (Hyogo Prefecture), and Kyoto Sanga (Kyoto Prefecture).

The meeting of two of these four teams is commonly known as the Kansai Derby. The wedge of these four teams also has their own derby designation. The Kyoto Sanga meeting with Gamba Osaka or Cerezo Osaka was named the Keihan Derby, while the Vissel Kobe meeting with two teams from Osaka was named the Hanshin Derby.

The biggest match in this area is the Osaka Derby, pitting Gamba Osaka, who is currently based in Suita City, Osaka Prefecture, with Cerezo from downtown Osaka.

In recent years, the Greater Tokyo Area is superior to Keihanshin when viewed from the distribution of J1 League champions.

In the last six seasons, the champions of the J1 League have always come from urban areas of the capital, with the Kawasaki Frontale champions four times, and Kashima Antlers and Yokohama F. Marinos each winning once.

The team from Keihanshin who last won the top caste of the Japanese League was Gamba Osaka when they won in the 2014 season. This season, it is interesting to see where the winning team comes from.
