Tunisia stops Nigeria in Africa Cup of Nations last 16
2022-01-28 00:02JAKARTA - The Tunisian national team stopped Nigeria in the round of 16 of the 2021 African Cup of Nations after beating their opponent 1-0 at the Roumde Adjia Stadium, Garoua, Cameroon, Monday (24/1/2022) WIB. The result is relatively a surprise when you look at the records of the two teams in the group stage.
Nigeria is the only team to have wiped out three wins, while Tunisia only qualified for the last 16 as one of the best third-placed teams. Tunisia's victory was supported by the only goal scored by Youssef Mkani in the 47th minute with a shot from outside the penalty box to find the ball into the bottom right corner of the Nigeria goal.
According to the official CAF website, Nigeria actually appeared more aggressive from the start, but Wilfried Ndidi and Samuel Chukwueze failed to finish two good chances in the first 15 minutes. Nigeria's efforts to come back from behind also met a big obstacle because they had to continue the match with only ten men since the 66th minute after Alex Iwobi received a red card for violating Mkani.
Ten Nigerian players almost equalized in the 67th minute, unfortunately Moses Simon's close-range shot could still be saved by goalkeeper Bechir Ben Said. Tunisia tried to take advantage of the gap in the number of players to double the advantage. But Tunisoa's best chance to do so ended with Ellyes Skhiri's left-footed effort still unable to get past the Nigerian back line.
Failure after failure also colored a number of Nigerian efforts to come from behind so that the 1-0 score for Tunisia lasted when the final whistle sounded. In the quarter-finals, Tunisia will face Burkina Faso, who had already eliminated Gabon on penalties.
