Wigan deducted three points for failing to pay players - EFL

Wigan Athletic have been deducted three points after failing to pay their players this month, the English Football League ( EFL ) said on Monday.

Bottom-of-the-table Wigan were also charged earlier this season for late fees in June , July and October last year. The North West club now have 31 points and are eight from safety .

" The latest breach by the club to meet its obligations means that the terms of the club's agreement with the EFL in January 2023 have been breached and the suspension of the application of sporting sanctions has been automatically triggered , " the EFL said in a statement .

The club's owners were asked to deposit an amount equal to 125 per cent of the forecast monthly payroll in a designated account in case there was a delay in processing the payment but failed to do so.

The EFL added: " In further breach of agreed decisions, the club owners have failed to deposit an amount equal to 125 per cent of their projected monthly wage bill into the nominated club account. "

" In the event of future delays in processing overseas payments, this is a key clause in the agreed decision to help prevent clubs from breaching EFL regulations again. "

Want to reproduce the " glory days "

The Wigan boss will also be charged with misconduct, the EFL said. The club was taken over by Phoenix Investments in 2021 , led by Bahraini businessman Abdulrahman Al-Jasmi , who said he wanted to relive the " glory days " .

" The club has taken note of the EFL 's announcement and charges and will issue a further update on the current wage situation in due course, " Wigan said.

Wigan spent eight seasons in the Premier League before the 2012-13 season, becoming the first club to win the FA Cup and be relegated in the same season .
