Atlético Madrid president insists his club can't sign Ronaldo
2022-07-28 20:39MADRID - Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo says a move for Cristiano Ronaldo from Atletico is almost impossible. Ronaldo held talks at the Manchester United (MU) training ground on Tuesday (26/7/2022) yesterday accompanied by his agent Jorge Mendes.
This is after Ronaldo missed MU's pre-season tour in Thailand and Australia due to family reasons.
ESPN, Wednesday (27/7/2022), reported earlier this month the Portugal international had made a transfer request because he wanted to play in the Champions League. Atletico was then linked as a possible destination club for the former Juventus player. But Cerezo is pessimistic about bringing him to the Wanda Metropolitano.
"I've said it many times. I don't know who created the story about Cristiano. But I will tell you, it's practically impossible for him to come to Atletico Madrid," Cerezo told reporters on Tuesday.
Last month Cerezo said Atletico needed to earn 40 million euros from player departures in order to register new players under the spending limit set by Spain's La Liga. The club's finances have since received an injection of two significant new sponsorship agreements. Including selling the naming rights for the Metropolitano stadium to the real estate company Civitas.
This summer, Atletico signed midfielder Axel Witsel on a free transfer. Meanwhile right-back Nahuel Molina flew to Madrid on Monday (25/7/2022) yesterday before completing his move from Udinese.
Ronaldo's arrival to Atletico will spark controversy among fans given his long relationship with city rivals Real Madrid. In recent years, the Madrid derby has always been hot and fierce.
Ronaldo is Real Madrid's all-time leading goalscorer and won four Champions League titles and two Spanish La Liga titles, during his nine years at the Santiago Bernabeu.
