Football news: Denmark's Delaney out of World Cup with injury

Defensive midfielder Thomas Delaney has been ruled out of the World Cup in Qatar after suffering a knee injury in a goalless draw with Tunisia in their Group D opener , Denmark said on Wednesday .

Delaney will miss about four weeks.

The 31 -year-old suffered a knee injury which not only limited his direct involvement but meant his game was over, a blow to Denmark 's hopes.

" We will miss him, both on and off the pitch. The rest of the players are ready and we have a strong squad for the next game, " said head coach Casper Hulmand .

Christian Eriksen returns

A veteran with 72 caps, Delaney was a key figure for his country's run to the semi-finals of Euro 2020 after Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest last year.

With the Manchester United playmaker back and rehabilitated, Denmark have been tipped as a potential dark horse contender ahead of the World Cup.

However, a bout against a tenacious Tunisia opened up an intriguing path to the knockout stages through the rest of Group D.
