Former RB Leipzig Sporting Director Christopher Vivell finally appointed as Chelsea's new Technical Director..
2022-12-22 13:23Chelsea announced on its official website on Wednesday that the club has appointed RB Leipzig's former German Sporting Director Christopher Vivell as its new Technical Director.
According to Chelsea's official statement, Vivell will take office immediately, becoming the third important strategist to join the behind the scenes staff of the Premier League club after American owner Todd Boehly's takeover.
After the news of his appointment was confirmed, Vivell, who was speaking by Chelsea's official website for the first time, said: "Chelsea is building the most exciting project in international football and I am very proud to join the club. The club has great potential to continue succeed, develop and grow. Under new manager Potter and his team, we have a clear and sustainable philosophy based on player performance analysis, data and innovation, and I look forward to being part of it. "
On the appointment of Vivell, Chelsea's joint shareholder Behdad Eghbali also added: "We are very pleased that Christopher will take on this important leadership role at the club. His work in Germany and Austria speaks for itself. We trust that he will continue his impressive form at Chelsea, he will provide vital support to Potter and the club's senior management and play an important role in advancing the club's overall vision."
The people behind Red Bull Football Group's success
The 36-year-old Vivell was born in Karlsruhe, Germany on December 15, 1986. He is 1.84 meters tall and played as a center forward during his playing career. He spent time playing at Karlsruhe and Hoffenheim youth academies but most of his career is spent playing in the German non-league clubs.
After retiring in 2010, Vivell returned to Hoffenheim as a data analyst, and began to also work as a scout the following year. In November 2015, Vivell joined Red Bull Salzburg as its Chief Scout, and was promoted to the role of Sporting Director the following year.
In August 2020, Vivell transferred to the sister club RB Leipzig and became its Sporting Director.
However, as he had already been poached by Boehly in October this year, he only officially left the Bundesliga powerhouse after completing his handover tasks.
As mentioned above, Vivell is the third behind-the-scenes maestro who left and joined Chelsea this season. Prior to this, the Blues also officially announced that former Monaco Technical Director Laurence Stewart will become the club's new global football development Technical Director; former Southampton Chief Scout Joe Shields will also become the club's new co-director of Talent Management and Recruitment.
