Official: Queiroz named Qatar coach

Carlos Queiroz, 69, has been hired as Qatar boss more than a month after the departure of Felix Sanchez.

As confirmed by the Qatar Football Association (QFA), Queiroz's term will end in 2026. His first aim is to secure Qatar's qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Coaching Qatar this time will be Queiroz's seventh national team after Portugal (twice), Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Iran (twice), Colombia and Egypt.

In 2022, Qatar made its World Cup debut as the host, and eventually lost 3 games in a row and Ecuador was eliminated from the group. Felix Sanchez later announced his departure to show responsibility for the team's loss.

The Qatar team will participate in two intercontinental championships this year, the first being the CONCACAF Gold Cup in June and the 18th AFC Asian Cup.
