Ronaldo will be reserved in the opening match of the MU Vs Brighton

Manchester United will host Brighton on Sunday (7/8/2022) at Old Trafford.

J AKARTA -- Cristiano Ronaldo will reportedly start Manchester United's (MU) Premier League opener in 2022/2023 from the bench. This is in the aftermath of ongoing uncertainty over his future at the club.

The Portuguese superstar has 12 months left on his £360,000-a-week contract at United. However CR7 has expressed his desire to leave the club earlier this summer because he wants to play in the Champions League.

The 37-year-old striker previously missed United's pre-season tour of Bangkok and Australia after the club gave him extra time off to deal with family matters. Ronaldo joined United's squad against Spanish side Rayo Vallecano. But he played just 45 minutes before leaving Old Traffiord before the game ended.

Therefore, according to a report by The Sun , Tuesday (2/8/2022), Erik ten Hag has decided Ronaldo will start United's Premier League opener against Brighton on the bench. The Dutch manager will give Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford a place in the starting XI after impressing during their pre-season.

However, ten Hag is currently beset with concerns due to Martial's fitness problems just four days ahead of Sunday's opener against Brighton at Old Trafford. The Frenchman picked up the injury in United's 1-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in pre-season, leaving the pitch after an hour holding his hamstring.

That comes as a blow to the Dutch manager as Martial has rediscovered his best form away from home this pre-season tour.

After being out of use last season and on loan at Sevilla, Martial may hope to leave the club this summer. But he has instead played an important role in pre-season and is likely to play a key role in Ten Hag's plans going forward.

Goals against Liverpool, Melbourne Victory and Crystal Palace have provided some impetus that Martial could become United's main man again after the previous few seasons failed to live up to expectations.

If Martial is ruled out, Ten Hag could turn to Ronaldo, who only returned to the club last summer after leaving in 2009 for Real Madrid. However, Ronaldo has made it clear that he wants to leave the club and secure a transfer before United's opening game of the season.
