Sporting news: Football Carrick appointed as new manager of junior club Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough have appointed former Manchester United caretaker Michael Carrick as their new manager , with the second-tier champions club saying on Monday that the former midfielder has been given his first role as permanent boss. Carrick left Manchester United in December to take temporary charge following the sacking of Norway manager Solskjaer.

The 41 -year-old former England international replaces Chris Wilder , who was sacked earlier this month when he was last at the club's bottom three .

In a statement, Carrick said: " Middlesbrough was my first professional club when I was nine, so it's a very special feeling to be back here as head coach. "

Carrick became United's interim manager last season after the club sacked Solskjaer in November and went unbeaten in his three games in charge. The former England international guided United to a Champions League away win at Villarreal before they drew at Chelsea and beat Arsenal in their final game at Old Trafford.

During his Manchester United career, Carrick won five Premier League titles , the Champions League, the Europa League, two League Cups and one FA Cup.
